Policing & Prisons |
Justice for Girls monitors, documents, and responds to human rights abuses within BC youth prisons and holding cells (city and court).
Since 2007, the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) has banned Justice for Girls from any form of contact with teen girl prisoners in BC Youth prisons. MCFD claims that Justice for Girls failed to comply with a legal duty to report child abuse when we discovered and reported sexual abuse allegations against a male doctor who performed breast and gynaecological examinations on girls (as young as 13 years old) as part of forensic psychiatric examinations (for the purposes of sentencing). While Justice for Girls was banned from all BC youth prisons and any contact with girl prisoners, the doctor maintained his job in the psychiatric assessment unit.
