March 7th - Panel on Man Camps & Violence: Risks to Indigenous Communities and Women and Girls
WHAT: Resource extraction, transportation, processing, and exportation directly impacts the lives and rights of local communities, especially Indigenous communities and women and girls. The 2019 National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls cautioned about the risks to safety and security of Indigenous women and girls from ‘man camps’ associated with these projects. This panel will discuss the upcoming Woodfibre/Fortis LNG project in Squamish, B.C. from this perspective, bringing together Indigenous women leaders, and their advocates, to discuss risks, strategies, and ongoing legal challenges to the Squamish project. Perhaps most alarming are the potential impacts of the Woodfibre ‘camp’ being established on a refurbished cruise ship to house LNG workers in the Howe Sound.
WHEN: March 7, 12:30-2pm
IN PERSON: In person at DLA Piper Hall, Room 204, Allard School of Law at UBC, 1822 East Mall
ONLINE: Register via Zoom.
WHO: All are welcome. We hope to see you all there!
